Getting to Know Your Pool
It's important to know the basics to keep your pool in tip-top shape (and to also know when to contact a professional for repair).
Understanding Your New Pool: Key Components and Maintenance Terms
Owning a pool is rewarding—but it pays to know how it works. Below are essential pool components and maintenance terms, adapted from The Spruce, that every new pool owner should understand.
1. Backwashing
Backwashing reverses water flow through your pool’s filter to flush out trapped debris. Perform backwashing until the discharge water runs clear, then rinse the filter before resuming normal operation.
2. Coping
Coping is the capstone along your pool’s edge, covering and protecting the shell’s top steel. Available in concrete, tile, natural stone, or pavers, coping also provides a polished border and non-slip surface around the pool.
3. DE Filter
A Diatomaceous Earth (DE) filter uses fine fossilized earth to trap microscopic debris, offering superior water clarity. Remember to backwash and regularly add fresh DE powder according to the manufacturer’s guidelines.
4. Gas Heater
Although solar heaters are growing in popularity, gas heaters remain the most common choice for consistent pool heating. They raise water temperature quickly, extending your swim season regardless of sunlight availability.
