Hurricane Season and Your Pool
Get your pool hurricane-ready with six expert tips: clear drains, trim trees, store items, maintain water level, shock the pool, and turn off power.
How to Prepare Your Pool for Hurricane Season
Hurricane season is approaching — make sure your pool is ready to weather the storm. Here are six essential steps, adapted from SunSentinel, to protect your pool and surrounding area:
Clear Deck Drains and Grates
Inspect and remove debris from all deck drains and grates. Check the edges of the pool deck for leaves or dirt that could clog your drainage system.Trim Trees and Shrubs
Prune branches and shrubs before the storm arrives to reduce the risk of damage to your pool enclosure, equipment, and home.Store Loose Items
Secure or store away lightweight objects such as pool toys, umbrellas, and planters to prevent them from becoming flying hazards.Maintain Proper Water Levels
Keep your pool water at its normal level. Do not drain the pool — an empty shell can suffer structural damage under high winds and heavy rain.Super-Chlorinate (Shock) Your Pool
Apply a standard pool shock treatment to help maintain water quality, reduce contaminants, and minimize algae growth during the storm.Turn Off Power
Before the storm hits, switch off all pool-related electrical circuits at the breaker panel to prevent equipment damage and reduce electrical hazards.
